Will publishers outsource?

The publishing industry has been undergoing a transition. Starting with increasing costs of production and print, the industry is struggling to address the increasing demand of digital content as opposed to print. In the midst of this transition, the global economic slowdown prompted lesser spending by consumers and corporate spenders.  Over the past few months, we have seen publishers try a variety of approaches – going digital, reducing print publishing, and cutting costs.

In spite of these measures, one thing comes across very strongly – the industry is yet to find that one formula/method that addresses all their problems. The lack of such a formula forced us to ask the question – will publishers outsource? Sure, some publishers already outsource certain aspects of their operations. But will they outsource more? Will they end up offshoring? And if they do want to outsource/offshore, what are the primary reasons for doing so? Are they hoping outsourcing will  be the ‘X’ factor while re-defining their business model?

To understand and evaluate where the industry is heading, we have been running a publishing survey. Our main objective here is to gain clarity on the following factors:

  • Are more publishers considering outsourcing?
  • What functional areas are publishers looking to outsource?
  • What are the primary drivers for outsourcing?
  • What are the cost savings publishers expect?

We have conducted an initial analysis of the survey results, and if you would like to know more, please do leave us a comment, and we’ll get back to you on the latest analysis.

Also, if you would like to participate in our survey, please follow this link. Feel free to pass on this survey to anyone and everyone you feel might take this survey. As always, we will be happy to share a summary of our findings once the study is completed.

  • The survey results are out!

  • Hi,

It is true that still more publishers prefer outsourcing. In recent years apart from large publishers, more small and medium publishers are interested outsourcing their requirement because of the recession.

Publishers would like to outsource their complete processes, which includes starting from the peer review to printing and distribution. This is good for Indian market; however, we do not have the capability in printing and distribution services at par with China.

I do not think that there will be a potential market for digital technology (e-books, DVD, and e-learning), because the reach of technology, lack of inadequate facility and psychological need of the people not yet changed in many countries.

I would like to see the result of the survey.

    All the Best.

  • @Narayan,

Integrating e-learning content with the print version is already happening. Pearson is doing that with all their educational books by referring to online courses originating from TutorVista (basically e-learning). I do see a lot of potential for e-learning when STM/Academic/Education ebooks go main stream. What really adds credibility to the potential synergy between e-learning and publishing is that a lot of service providers are offering both...

The digital technology brings with it great opportunitites as well as new challenges. In the educational publishing, for instance, how would E-learning content integrate with that of the print version? Is there any statatics to prove the efficacy of the E-Learning model at the school level?

    Please reply.
  • Tom Friedman, in The World is Flat, discusses how publishers were one of the first industries to offshore. As a service provider to the industry, I have seen how this has changed the landscape for both publishers and service providers over the past years. I would be very interested in receiving the results of your survey.
    Thank you.
