| Challenges to overcome – Indian Bioinformatics Vendors |
|
Contract research assignments usually generate large amounts of data. Hence, to facilitate the storage, management, retrieval, and analysis of this data, the application of IT to the life sciences sector - bioinformatics, assumes increasingly higher significance. The use of bioinformatics tools lower costs, improve efficiency and reduce development-to-launch timelines. Outsourcing to India, compared to other developed countries, offers about 30-40% costs savings in overall drug discovery research, and close to 60% cost savings when outsourcing core bioinformatics services. This is owing to the lower wage costs for skilled manpower, and lower infrastructure costs. The Indian bioinformatics vendor space has seen the mushrooming of pure play bioinformatics players, entry of multinationals and increased focus of IT companies on the life sciences vertical. Also, pharma and biotech CRAMS players have started offering informatics services. CRAMS players score over other vendors as they provide a complete portfolio of services ranging from contract research, bioinformatics and contract manufacturing services.
